The search engine on the Library website allows for
the following types of searches, sometimes called Boolean Operators:
AND, OR, NOT and a phrase search using quotation marks.
AND searches:
If two words are put in the search box, the search engine will automatically
do an AND search. That means it will look for pages that include both
words. For example, a search on RESEARCH GUIDE will find all pages on
the website that include both RESEARCH and GUIDE.
OR searches:
A search on RESEARCH OR GUIDE means that the search engine will look
for all pages on the website that include either the words RESEARCH
or GUIDE.
NOT searches:
A search on RESEARCH NOT GUIDE means that the search will look for only
those pages that include RESEARCH but not the word GUIDE. This type
of search is helpful, for example, if you're looking for information
on apple the fruit, not Apple the computer company. In that situation,
you would type in APPLE NOT COMPUTER.
Phrase searches:
A phrase search is used to find words in an exact order. In this situation
a search on "RESEARCH GUIDE" (note the quotation marks around
the search) will only find those pages that include the words RESEARCH
GUIDE as they appear as an exact phrase.
