Legal Research & Training Center

The Legal Research and Training Center was funded in part through a Community Access to Technology grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Hours and Locations:

Classes taught at the King County Courthouse will be held in the Legal Research and Training Center (LRTC) at the Seattle Branch of the King County Law Library on the 6th floor of the King County Courthouse at 516 3rd Avenue, Suite W621.

Classes taught at the Maleng Regional Justice Center (MRJC) will be held in the Community Room inside the Detention Center - NOT in the Kent Branch of the King County Law Library.

Civil Procedure in 90 Minutes
Learn the basics of civil procedure in Washington state, including terminology, the court system, and the steps of the civil litigation process.

E-Filing Assistance new item
This is a four-part class to provide training on how to use the King County Superior Court’s E-Filing system. Part One will cover how to navigate around the E-Filing site, how to set up an account, how to begin a new case and related topics. Part Two will go over how to add files to an existing case, technical issues concerning document preparation, and other troubleshooting topics. Part Three covers E-Working Copies and using the Status Tab. Part Four talks about E-Service and Ex-Parte.

How to Finish Your Divorce
The King County Bar Association teaches a How to Finish Your Divorce seminar the second Wednesday of every month from 5:15pm to 6:45pm in the Library's Legal Research and Training Center. This class is free and pre-registration is not required.

Legal Research for the Non-Attorney Parts 1 and 2
This two-part class focuses on basic legal research techniques for the non-attorney and highlights books and online resources for legal research on the local, state and federal level.

Public Sleuthing on Social Networks
Learn how to search social networking sites like My Space and Facebook.

Searching Washington Superior Court Case Information
Learn how to use the new searching features on the Washington Courts webpage plus a brief overview of the King County Superior Court's ECR service (paid access to scanned-in court documents).

Searching on Westlaw
Learn how to search on Westlaw using Boolean operators as well as advanced search strategies. Participants are welcome to bring a sample query to search.

Searching Lexis
Learn about basic and advanced searching strategies for Lexis.

Skiptracing: Finding Business and Personal Information
Learn how to do skip tracing online using free, publicly-accessible databases.

Suing Mad: Commencing an Action new item
Can you sue? Should you sue? How do you file a lawsuit? Learn the basics for filing a lawsuit in Superior Court, including alternatives to filing a lawsuit, along with how to format your pleadings and resources to help you fill out your complaint.
