(Requires registration to use).

Cornell University Law School: Legal Information Institute: U.S. Supreme Court decisions from 1992 to present, along with 300 historic decisions.

Findlaw: From the Thomson West group, this site includes U.S. Supreme Court decisions since 1893 and federal appellate decisions generally from the mid-1990’s to present, plus links to state court opinions.

Altlaw: This is a joint project of Columbia Law School and the University of Colorado Law School. It contains U.S. Supreme Court cases from 1791 to present and federal appellate cases from 1950 to 2007.

The Public Library of Law: Provided by Fastcase, this web site includes state case law from 1997 forward, federal circuit courts from 1950 to present and U.S. Supreme Court cases from 1754 to present.

Precydent: Open law source containing federal appellate cases from 1950 to present, U.S. Supreme Court cases from 1759 to present, and federal district court opinions from 2004 to present. Although “the Federal District Court database is not completed, it is very partial because not all the Federal District Courts publish their opinions online.” This site also includes limited state court cases. This site’s search features are particularly good, producing excellent results and relevant cases.

Listen to the Podcast Episode 1: Would you like to join us for a Sidebar?
In this inaugural episode, library staff members provide an introduction to podcasting and give an overview of the Costco wholesale liquor decision (plus some excellent advice on beer choices for the fall season).

How to find information on the Costco decision (Costco Wholesale Corp. vs. Hoen, April 21, 2006):

  • Search the Seattle Times and Seattle P-I archives (Newspaper archive databases are also available on the SPL and KCLS websites to library card holders)
  • Search PACER (a subscription database from the federal courts). Look for docket number C04-360P.
  • Search Westlaw and Lexis (both available for free at the King County Law Library). Westlaw citation: 2006 WL 1515590; Lexis citation: 2006 U.S. Dist LEXIS 27141.
