| Collection Note: Elder Law (May 2003) |
| As the baby boom generation of the United States ages, elder law has gained prominence in the legal field. Consequently many books and articles have been written on this topic. Elder Law and Practice with Forms by Cheryl C. Mitchell and Fred H. Mitchell. (Washington Practice series, v. 26) published by West Group in 1988 covers eight broad topics for Washington practitioners. The authors discuss developing an effective elder law practice, disability and estate planning, care management trusts, guardianships and alternatives, protecting the rights of elderly clients, assisted care options, qualifying for medicaid, and probate from an elder law perspective. The text is accompanied by numerous forms and checklists. For a quick overview of elder law you may wish to consult Elderlaw in a Nutshell by Lawrence A. Frolik, and Understanding Elder Law: Issues in Estate planning, Medicaid, and Long-Term Care Benefits by L. Rush Hunt, Patricia Day, and Michael McCauley. The Nutshell was published by West in 2003 and the Understanding Elder Law was published by the American Bar Association in 2002. The Practising Law Institute is well known for conducting continuing legal education seminars on hot topics and publishing the accompanying course materials. Last fall they published the 14th Annual Elder Law Institute: Basic Elder Law. Clients consulting an attorney about elder law issues may also have concerns about other aspects of their personal lives. Family Estate Planning Guide by Frederick K. Hoops, Frederick H. Hoops and Daniel S. Hoops covers a broad range of estate planning topics. Some of the topics covered in this text of note are elderly domestic relationships and special needs trusts. And finally, the Washington State Bar Association and King County Bar Association frequently publish continuing legal education materials on elder law that are also available in the Law Library. |
